I have a funny story for you: close to a year ago I put my Tivo up on craigslist. Almost immediately I received an email that said some guy that lived out in Hillsboro would like to buy it from me. The guy came, paid and picked it up. Normal craigslist transaction, no big whoop. Somehow I added him or he added me on twitter and I didn't think anything of it. 6 months later I had some Blazer tickets up on craigslist and the same guy contacted me saying that he would like to buy those as well. AND just a few months after that he contacted me about photographing his wedding! Thats how I met Joe.

For the engagement session we ventured down to the swanky Pearl District in downtown Portland, Oregon. I've been itching to shoot there and Joe and Nadine were happy to give it a go. I absolutely loved shooting down there because of the diversity of the colors and textures. It's not just a couple colors from a couple color palates it's a CRAZY amount of different colors from maroon to dark blue to bright red to purple and everything in between. Joe and Nadine were a lot of fun to work with too and it was very clear to me that they are totally in love and excited to be married. :)

And if I could geek out for a moment, get this: They met at Yahoo...as in they both worked for Yahoo. How cool is that?

Danger Death Ray Band Shoot

Again I present to you the Portland pop punk band Danger Death Ray. They got their name from an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3k for us hardcore fans) which is amazingly awesome in and of itself. Ryan (the tall one) is a part time security guard at a very old and very cool church in downtown Portland. We had unlimited access for the shoot and had such a blast. As I've said before, I love doing band shoots because I can really push myself creatively in ways that just don't work with families or weddings.

Rock 'n Roll Saturday Night

A couple weeks ago I had the privilege of going to buddy's concert in his basement. Basement concerts are a rite of passage of sorts for Portland bands. Artists like The Decemberists, The Helio Sequence, The Thermals, M. Ward, The Dandy Warhols and Elliot Smith made the rounds of playing the basements of PDX.

Here is the final installment of our photo shoot. These were all taken with my film camera (Nikon F100), developed by hand and scanned in. There is something very satisfying about developing by hand and as I've said before, shooting film in general. These shots are straight out of the camera with no manipulation in photoshop. I also really like the imperfections of the film look and grain quality. Fun stuff!

To preface these photos I feel the need to echo the sediments of the great fashion model and philanthropist, Derek Zoolander: " I'm pretty sure there's more to life than being really, really ridiculously good looking". Indeed there is and to prove it I present for your enjoyment the photos of Drew and Tiffany. For not only are they indeed "ridiculously good looking" but also are the funnest and nicest people that you ever could meet.

For this shoot we went to an industrial section of SE Portland, Oregon. It's an area I drive by almost everyday and I was so excited that Drew and Tiffany were willing to do our shoot there.

I'll be rolling these all out in probably 3 different volumes because I shot some of them with film that I am developing by hand and then scanning in. (yay!)

Film is not dead after all. Who knew?

After a little bit of drama that can be a part of ebay/craigslist transactions, I now have my first SLR camera (notice the missing D). A few of my favorite photographers in the world only shoot film so I decided to try my hand and picked up a Nikon F100. The first thing I noticed was how it totally has changed my approach to the process of taking photos. No longer do I fire off 10 pics in a row and choose the best one or not worry if a photo is a little over or under exposed. Instead, shooting film forces me to choose very carefully the photos I take with no instant gratification due to not having the LCD screen. Each shot also costs me money for film and developing. I have to say that there is a learning curve especially not having too much control over white balance and ISO on the fly. I also still find myself constantly checking the back of the camera after each shot out of habit. In all I'm very excited about the new venture and the different quality of photos that film offers. Below is the very first photo I've taken with my F100 with no editing other than desaturation. This could get seriously addicting. Dang you Leo and Jonathan! :)

A photographer friend of mine gave me some great advice when I was just getting started with photography. He told me that no matter how busy I get with taking pictures for clients to always make time to do some personal work for only myself. At the time I hadn't started a business or even considered it but now that I am busy with fairly consistent work I am finding his advice valuable.

Following his advice I took this photo of my cat on our new couch. You'll probably see a lot of our new couch in personal photos because it has mid-century-modern lines and really looks cool in photos. Our poor little bengal cat was recently de-clawed so he has to wear that dish around his head.

Meet the totally fun and totally photogenic Hellige family! You might remember Mitchell, their son, from some football pictures I took back several months ago. We met at Murase Plaza in Wilsonville, Oregon (which is just south of Portland) for their family photo shoot. I have used this location several times before and love the diversity of colors and textures that are present in the buildings.

Their relaxed and natural personalities really came across in the photos and I could have probably spent the rest of the afternoon taking their pictures it was so enjoyable. To view all of them please check out my proofing site.

So while I was in a meeting this morning I was sent an email that I thought was a joke. It said that Joe McNally (a personal favorite photographer and pioneer of creative off-the-camera flash photography) had given a photo of mine an award for a contest he conducted. This contest was for creating interesting photos that use his "The Moment it Clicks" concept of telling stories with creative lighting. As it turns out, the email was legit and I had indeed won the contest in which tens of thousands of other photos were entered.

The photo that won was one I took at Skateworld of my sister, Olivia:

Joe made the comment:

"The skater rental dept. portrait....just great, simple use of light and graphics and mood. Sets the scene, and tells the story of the young lady behind the counter pretty much wishing she were out with her boyfriend instead of supplying skates to a bunch of screaming youngsters....love it."

What's cool is that when I took the photo that is exactly what I told Olivia to portray when I took the photo...and she pulled it off flawlessly, showing just what an amazing model she is.

I honestly feel so humbled that one of my photography idols recognized a photo of mine. Just his compliment was enough but I won't turn down the shwag that also came with winning. :)

The first thing you should know is that I LOVE snow. In fact, I thought about applying to the University of Minnesota for further graduate work because of this. However my wife informed me that if I did go there it would be alone, so that idea was quickly scratched. Anyway, when I had the opportunity to take photos for my sister in law in the snow I was excited.

Mindy and Brooks were an amazing couple to shoot and such good sports even in the freezing cold. We ventured down to the Columbia river front in Kennewick, Washington for these and there were so many photos that I loved from this day that it was hard to pair them down.

New gear

There's a new snake in my boot! (and by snake I mean a lens and by boot I mean my camera bag) I broke down and bought an amazing new lens from a fellow on craigslist. I won't tell any prices but I got an almost new lens for about 40% off it I would have bought it brand new.

Anyway, the lens is the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S IF-ED. Since I know only about half of what those intitials mean I'll just say that this is the best and highest quallity lens I have in my bag and it shows in the photos I've taken with it. It's tack sharp at every aperture, it's the perfect focal length on a DX body for portraits and I couldn't be more happy with it. I'm excited to start putting it through it's paces.

Back in August during a family reunion, my sister-in-law and I did a little family photo swap. Around the time of the great depression Little Joe's once wealthy father lost everything. In a desperate attempt to find work his family drove across the US staying in abandon barns along the way. This photo was taken in front of one of the barns. While they had lost everything material they never gave up hope...or their fantastically awesome designer clothing.

OK, so I just made that story up. But doesn't this photo have that same old timey feel? I just couldn't post it without some kind of narrative attached. :)

In truth, it was taken from a recent shoot of the Campbell family in Sherwood Oregon. For a photo session of 21 people it only took me a little over an hour so I have given them my award for the best behaved children in a supporting role.

Since this is my first year of owning my photography business I have decided to start a tradition of every Christmas season donating my services as a photographer to charity. This year I decided to donate a session to the Children's Relief Nursery (www.crn4kids.org) charity auction. The family that bid and won was the Milla Family whose photos will be today and tomorrow. They have some of the cutest girls I've ever had the pleasure of photographing and their grandfather was also in town so we braved the rain and took some pictures on the east waterfront by OMSI.

I know that several other photographers check my blog so I had to pass this along and hey, even if your not a photog you might get a kick out of this.

You've got to love geek humor and people with a little too much time on their hands. :)

For those of you who aren't aware, there is a hubbub on the internets about Nikon releasing a new 24 megapixel camera for a pretty high price. While Canon has their 1D series, Nikon is now entering the ring with their new D3X. Both cameras are somewhat over kill and totally more camera than most photographers need. But I'm finding that Nikon owners are somewhat like Macintosh owners...they are a tight knit group and can be pretty snobby. I'm a Nikon shooter and I just think it's funny that people are so upset about the release of an expensive camera. I'm thinking to myself: "If you don't like the price, don't buy it." No sense in getting mad that a company is selling something you feel is overpriced. I remember hearing similar rumblings when the iPhone was announced from the Apple faithful.

Silly fan boys. I just thought I'd share. :)

Here they are! Roger and Natalie were married on November 21st, 2008 at the World Forestry Center in Portland Oregon. First off, what an amazing place to have a wedding! Being a native Oregonian I particularly appreciated being able to shoot an event at a place that I went to as a wee lad. Both the bride and groom looked wonderful and the night couldn't have been more perfect. This week the photos will be of various aspects of that wonderful day. We'll start with: Details. Here is a sneak peek of a wedding I had the pleasure of shooting. I thought that the original photo had this "old timey" feel so I went with my gut and took that theme a little further. :)
As you can tell by going through my portfolio I tend to not be too extreme with my editing. Any work I do in Aperture and Photoshop tends to be on the more warm and bright side. It was so much fun to be a little more artistic and different. Most of the photos I took of the wedding will be fairly traditional but I couldn't help myself with this one. :)

I recently was asked to shoot a cooperate event at Adidas for the international press to introduce some of their new NBA shoes. Any one who knows me knows what a huge basketball freak I am so the chance to photograph an event like this was a dream come true (just short of actually shooting a Blazer game:). Not only was the presentation absolutely spectacular but a few of the Blazers were invited to meet some of the press and shoot some hoops. The next several days will feature photos of the event.
